January is typically a month for New Year’s resolutions, when people trial new things and try to break out of old habits. With many consumers joining the campaigns for going sober for a month or trying out new diets, Veganuary is quickly growing in popularity, with this year’s new record breaking number of people taking the pledge to become vegan for a month.
Research shows that health is the second biggest reason people go vegan – to cut out cholesterol, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. For most, love of animals is the catalyst, while others would like to set themselves a challenge, and many combine Veganuary with their ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ and see trying vegan as the healthiest start to the year. Whatever your reason, it’s obvious Veganuary is gaining in strength, attracting more supporters every year.
This year’s Veganuary has had its most successful outing yet – with more than 225,000 people signing up for its vegan pledge – and many more expected to do so before the month is over. The charity’s target for this year’s sign-ups is 300,000 – which is in sight.
With many high street restaurants and retailers offering special deals on their plant-based lines and discounts to all those choosing vegan options, the campaign is really starting to pick up pace. This week the charity members spoke at an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) meeting on Veganism and Vegetarianism urging the politicians to ditch the animal-based products.
“While the public appetite for everything vegan continues to skyrocket, this has not been matched by policy or political leadership. The Government has so far done little to heed the advice of the scientific community, which states that reducing meat and dairy consumption is vital if we are to avert catastrophic climate change,” Rich Hardy, Head of Campaigns at Veganuary, said.
