Following an encounter with a missionary priest, who had been working in the desert area of Kenya, HTC Group’s Chairman, Gerry Olohan, decided to get involved in a local footbal league project that keeps the kids active and engages local community.
In the town of Lodwar, which is located in a very poor region of Kenya, the local church and school attached to it, has organised a football league of 5 teams, under the name Mapro. Each team has a name of the European Football Club it supports: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Barcelona.
Every season, the schoolkids playing in Mapro, organise a competition with a grand finale at the end, which is a huge local attraction. The young players treat the contest very seriously, getting printed programs and inviting town residents and supporters. Unfortunately, the church’s funds are scarce, and many of the kids play barefoot, in the kits they have managed to put together themselves. That however, doesn’t dampen their enthusiasm.
Hearing about this project, the founder of HTC, was touched by the passion the kids have for football. And so he decided to help in anyway he could, starting by sending a donation to cover the costs of goalposts, nets etc. He also reached out to the European football clubs the kids so admire and asked them to donate some of their branded gear.
For now, Arsenal Footbal Club, has donated 15 sets of their clothing kits, saying the were very happy to help the kids. HTC organised the shipping and the young players were absolutely ecstatic to receive the replicas of Arsenal Away match shirts, shorts and socks. Gerry remains hopeful that the remaining clubs will follow suit.
To support the Lodwar community, which is constantly struggling with poverty, HTC board also decided to also donate some of our products. Next week, we’ll be sending out some of our bestselling supplements like Fish Oil capsules and Vitamin C tablets, to support healthy development of the young players. Please get in touch, if you want to get involved!
